Panel Delays Voting On Noose Display, Cross Burning Bill

Credit: AP Online
RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina lawmakers delayed voting on a plan to raise the penalties for hanging nooses and burning crosses when perpetrators are carrying out the acts to intimidate people.

A House judiciary committee on Thursday discussed the plan from Franklin County Sen. Doug Berger, but decided to delay voting to give lawmakers time to propose and study changes.

The Democrat says he was interested in removing a requirement that the perpetrators would have to be of another race, religion or nationality for the acts to qualify as felonies.

Republican Rep. Tim Moore of Cleveland County said he wanted the act of burning an American flag to intimidate someone added to the list of actions which could qualify for the tougher penalties.

Members will study the proposals and meet later to vote on the bill.

Well I applaud these politicians for passing a bill that would prohibt these acts but I would like to say also that if they ban these and make them felonies then they need to also make Flag Burning against the law and a felony. You can’t have this bill and not have the flag burning bill making it illegal because you just look like an illiterate hypocrite.
